Right time, right place for addressing elder abuse

November 15, 2018

Australia’s Age Discrimination Commissioner is the keynote speaker at the Eastern Community Legal Centre’s (ECLC) 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Balwyn North on Tuesday 20 November 2018.

The theme of ECLC’s AGM is ‘Right Time, Right Place’ so Dr Kay Patterson AO will be speaking to this theme about elder abuse and the role lawyers, health and community service staff play in detection and support.

Elder abuse is a hard to detect and seldom reported due to shame, concealment of the abuse, and lack of understanding about seniors’ rights.

“Elder abuse is a growing human rights issue that requires a multifaceted approach with all corners of the community working together,” Dr Patterson said.

ECLC is working with many partners to address elder abuse through early intervention, collaborative service responses, community education, and prevention initiatives.

“Legal services like ECLC are at the coalface of this issue at a community level and initiatives such as the Eastern Elder Abuse Network are best practice.

“Older, vulnerable Australians deserve our utmost collaborative, efficient and dedicated efforts to respect their human rights, support their empowerment and safeguard their safety,” Dr Patterson said.

The AGM will also highlight ECLC’s initiatives across the age spectrum and many locations, through the ‘Right Time, Right Place’ theme.

ECLC’s AGM will be held:

Tuesday, 20 November at 3.00 pm
Foard Williams Room
Greythorn Community Hub
2 Centre Way, Balwyn North.
