Sort It: Partnership renewed for next 3 years

February 27, 2017

Sort It! Deakin Legal Service for Students will continue to provide extensive on campus services in 2017 with renewed support from Deakin University Student Association and its partner Barwon Community Legal Service. ECLC thanks DUSA for its ongoing support of the service.

In the 2016 year, Sort It assisted approximately 225 people at Deakin’s Burwood campus alone. International students accounted for 84% of clients assisted. Students presented with a range of issues, including migration, traffic offences, tenancy, debt and family violence.

O-Week

ECLC’s Sort It team has been very active throughout the O-Week festivities at Burwood this week (February 27 – March 3), kickstarting the semester and promoting the service to a fresh intake of students.

The beginning of the year can be a high-stress and vulnerable time for students, particularly those who have moved from overseas or are living out of home for the first time. Sort It provides assistance and information to students on common legal issues, and links students to DUSA’s other advocacy services for housing, social and financial support.

Students and Student Advisors can also access information on common legal problems by visiting ECLC’s Sort It! Resources for Students page, which includes a new pro forma co-tenancy agreement developed by ECLC (with pro bono support) to prevent legal problems in share house accommodation.
