Getting the message right on prevention of abuse against older people

October 1, 2021

Last month, the Eastern Elder Abuse Network (EEAN), held a workshop on effective messaging and approaches, the prevention of abuse against older people and how to change ageist attitudes and behaviours.

Participants heard from Mark Chenery of Common Cause Australia and writer and filmmaker, Dr Sophia Bilbrough.

Mark spoke about the messaging guide project he is working on and shared recommendations and tips to guide valued-based messages to improve the way we talk about age, ageing and older people in ways that reduce and address ageism.

This will be launched on 20  October by Mark, along with Marlene Krasovitsky from EveryAGE Counts and the Victorian Commissioner for Senior Victorians, Gerard Mansour. It can be downloaded here.

Sophia shared her work developing WIRE’s Respectful Conversations about Money resources, comprising videos, conversation guides and other materials to assist people in talking about financial issues within couples and between family members that can often be difficult.

Thanks to both presenters and the EEAN for continuing its commitment to best practice prevention approaches.
