Volunteering

?

The work of Eastern Community Legal Centre would not be possible without the support of its dedicated team of over one hundred volunteers. The Centre greatly appreciates the contribution of all volunteers and endeavours to make the experience as rewarding as possible.

Important Notes

  • The Centre expects a minimum commitment of six months to any volunteer position in the hope of building an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship with all volunteers. As such, the Centre is unable to assist work experience students or short term placement volunteers.
  • Generally, the Centre gives priority to volunteers who live within its catchment area. The catchment area encompasses the Cities of Whitehorse, Boroondara, Manningham, Maroondah, Knox and the Yarra Ranges.
  • The Centre has an Inner East office in Box Hill and an Outer East office in Boronia. Applications for a voluntary position should be directed to the office that is closest to applicant’s place of residence.

How to Apply

Lawyers

The Centre regularly seeks the expertise of volunteer lawyers. Volunteer lawyers are required to have a current practising certificate and some experience in legal practice.

The work undertaken by the Centre’s volunteer lawyers is both interesting and rewarding. Volunteer lawyers provide legal advice to the members of the community who need it most, while also mentoring law students in a supportive environment.

Generally, volunteer lawyers do not undertake casework and legal advice is provided by appointment only. Volunteer lawyers can be confident that they will provide legal advice only in areas of law that they are competent in and that reflect the Advice and Casework Guidelines of the Centre.

If you would like to apply for a volunteer lawyer position at the Centre, please contact the Co-ordinator – People and Development at the Box Hill office.

Paralegals, Students and Community Volunteers

To apply for a position or express interest in undertaking a specific project, please forward a cover letter outlining your skills and experience, and a current resume to volunteers (at) eclc.org.au, attention to the Co-ordinator – People and Development.

You application should also note the following:

  • Preferred location (Box Hill / Boronia)
  • Position of interest
  • Current availability

Generally, eligibility for the Intervention Order Support Service at Ringwood Magistrates Court requires previous experience gained through other volunteer programs at the Centre.

All voluntary positions are highly sought after and the Centre reviews its requirements on a regular basis. Applications for voluntary positions will be retained on a waiting list for six months with applicants contacted if a suitable position becomes available.
