knox accord

The Knox Accord Project is a community strengthening initiative aimed at enhancing women’s safety within Knox and raising community awareness regarding family violence.

ECLC will be working on the Project in partnership with various Knox-based agencies led by Knox Community Health Service. This continues our commitment to making a difference in the lives of women and children experiencing family violence and reducing the occurrence and prevalence of violence in our community.

The Project will involve the development of a Knox Accord Policy. The Policy aims to highlight Knox as a community which does not tolerate violence in general, and violence against women in particular, as well as having developed effective responses to violence where it has occurred. Community members and representatives of organisations, services and businesses will be invited to become signatories to the Policy. A Support Symbol will be available for display by those organisations or businesses which have taken steps to improve organisational responses to violence against women.

The Knox Accord Project will also include strategies and protocols to support the community to better understand the nature, impact and “costs” of family violence through education sessions and a media and promotion strategy.

In 2007, to coincide with White Ribbon Day, over 1000 people signed a petition at Knox City Shopping Centre, declaring that violence against women is not acceptable. This response from the community was amazing! What was incredibly pleasing for volunteers collecting signatures was the high level of young men signing the petition.
